Estimating cattle or calf weights

Livestock owners need to know the weight of their animals for a variety of reasons, such as determining proper feed rations, administering medication, and tracking growth. Approved and properly calibrated livestock scales are the most accurate way to determine the weight, but there are other methods that can be used when scales are not available.

Visual observation is the least accurate method and is not encouraged when an accurate weight is important. Weigh tapes and weight estimation formulas are more accurate than visual observation, but they are not as accurate as livestock scales. The method below is a nice way to get a good estimation of weight.
